"Hearts of Freedom" Juneteenth Community Celebration

Our second annual Community Juneteenth Celebration is fast approaching and we cannot wait to share the day with you! We'll be gathering on the New Canaan Museum & Historical Society lawn on Monday, June 19th from 1 pm until 5 pm. Bring food or purchase soul food from Miss Thelma's! We are so excited to have 5iveFingaz lead us in creating a community graffiti wall for Juneteenth, while we enjoy the beautiful music from The Misfits! We will be providing delectable red velvet cupcakes and hibiscus tea. You can register for this event here (drop-ins on the day of are more than welcome!)

According to ChatGPT, “Red foods can have symbolic meaning for Juneteenth. Red is a significant color associated with Juneteenth as it represents resilience, perseverance, and the bloodshed of enslaved African Americans in their struggle for freedom. Many people incorporate red foods into their Juneteenth celebrations as a way to honor and remember the sacrifices and resilience of their ancestors. Red foods such as red velvet cake, red punch, watermelon, red beans and rice, and red barbecue dishes are commonly enjoyed during Juneteenth gatherings. The color red serves as a powerful reminder of the history and significance of Juneteenth.”
